Troubleshoot - Default File Association (Corrupted Profile)

Synopsis: Post Migration Issue - Default FileType Associations. Troubleshooting steps and (hopefully) solution. No Solution has yet been found.

Issue Symptons:
  • Setting the default app for filetypes association like .pdf, or .html, or .https, doesn't work. After choosing the new application such as Adobe or Chrome, the option defaults back to MS Edge.


  • Occurs after profwhiz - profile migration. Creating a new profile is not an option as it defeats the purpose of the migration.
  • Desktop Icons & File Icons in explorer flashing on cadence
  • Occured on at least 2 different Windows 11 computers: Surface Pro 5, and Surface Pro 6.

    • Completed driver/firmware package update from windows downloads

      Related errors exist constantly in event viewer
